Getting to Know You!
Do you like math and science? Are you interested in connecting people with information about medicine or the law? Perhaps you have discovered your passion in a performing arts or film library. Do you want to work with something other than books? Suppose you’re drawn to an environment that’s not your typical library, in other words - a Special Library, and the Special Libraries Association Student Group wants to know how we can serve you.
We are looking to understand the information-seeking behaviors of our members. What information do you hope to find through the Special Library Association? What are your interests? Our goal is to better serve our members with strong programming and events.
This should take only about 5 minutes to complete. Be as honest and as specific as you would like. Your insights are very important to us! Thank you for your time!

HIGHLIGHTS
Welcome Aiko, Programming Director! 🥳
(Sydney) Aiko Hamamoto (she/they) has a background in history, English literature, and technology studies. They are currently pursuing a master’s in Library and Information Science, where they are cultivating their interest in the liberatory potential of information spaces and community-centered archival practices. In between work and school, she enjoys dabbling in different art mediums, studying herbalism, and consuming pop culture.
Welcome Dana, Second Assistant Membership Director! 🎉
Dana began her MLIS journey at SJSU in January 2022. She earned a BA in Sociology from St. Francis College and a Master in Public Administration degree from CUNY Baruch College. She has spent most of her career at a federal circuit court and recently transitioned to an assistant librarian role in the court’s law library. Throughout her MLIS coursework, she has also gained interest in digital asset management and is thus working towards earning the fully online Advanced Certificate in Strategic Management of Digital Assets and Services program with a focus on Digital Asset Management. When she is not juggling work and school, you can find her cooking new recipes, gardening, and working on her fitness.

Congratulations Michelle Sosa, ARL Kaleidoscope Program Award Recipient! 🎊
The ARL Kaleidoscope Program is a two-year initiative designed to empower BIPOC graduate students for impactful careers in research libraries and archives by providing enhanced leadership development and community-building opportunities. Through financial support, mentoring, access to educational experiences, and signature events, Kaleidoscope Scholars are prepared to navigate post-degree professional settings and contribute to just and inclusive research information environments. Funded by ARL member institutions, the program aims to create a supportive community of BIPOC leaders, support scholars in their academic pursuits, foster connections with established professionals, and promote critical inquiry toward equity and inclusivity in the field.
Congratulations, Michelle, on receiving the ARL Kaleidoscope Program Scholar Award!

BLOG
The blog team wants to announce that assistant blog editor Marlinda Gallardo will withdraw from her position due to a family health emergency. We wish her and her family the best. The position currently remains open. Please help us spread the word about this opening.
This month, Michelle and I have two blog posts to present:
USC Music Library
Between 1982 and today, the Music Library continued to shift in location and size; today, it houses 90,000 items and is located on the ground floor of the Doheny Library. Among its archival collections, the library houses items such as the Chuck Connors collection, Harry James collection, phonograph cylinders collection, and much more. The library also has an impressive research guide page curated by the current music librarian, Andrew Justice, which contains even more materials, such as scores, videos, books, and articles for further music research.
Rare Books LA
Is your prized literary possession an old or rare book? Do you enjoy searching for a dusty first-edition copy of your favorite novel? Does the history of book collecting interest you? If you answered yes to any of these questions, Rare Books LA may be right up your alley. Rare Books LA hosts book sales and fairs, presentations, and exhibits featuring specialists in antiquarian books, photography, ephemera, and more at convention centers in cities like Palm Springs, Santa Monica, LAX, and Pasadena- and soon New York City! Their events have become a hot spot for bibliophiles and collectors worldwide to share their love of books, manuscripts, and more. Their book fairs have attracted history buffs, collectors, and researchers looking for their next big find.
